We're just now rolling out this new system so there will be a few quirks. Please bear with us. If you see anything that needs improvement, please contact Jack. There will be an upgrade sometime in May 2012 when Livefyre, the company who created the commenting system, issues a new version. Until then expect some small amount of awkwardness since this is young software.
Sign in - It's a simple system. First click on "Sign in." You can comment with one or more of the social media listed on the left. If you have no accounts with any of them, use the right side to create a Livefyre account. This is quick, free, and safe.
Real names - Please use your real name. This is a serious, professional caliber site. If your Twitter, Facebook, or other account doesn't use your real name, you can create a Livefyre account with your real name. Make your first and last name the same as your username.
Create your comment - Enter your thoughtful comment. You can paste URLs, which will show up as links. Notice how you can use the "@"symbol to tag and notify friends. Experiment with this to see how it works. If you want to also post your comment to your Twitter or Facebook account, check those boxes. HTML, such as bolding, is not supported. When done, click "Post comment."
Moderation - All comments are moderated. After you've become a commentator extraordinaire, you will be white listed and your comments will sail through in real time with no moderation. This is self-moderation, a very trusted role.
Deletions - You can't change your comment but you can delete it. This is okay if done right away. However, if done later after people have read it, a delete changes history, so try to avoid it.
Play around with the commenting system interface. You can follow and unfollow the comments on a page. Follow will cause emails to be sent to you. You can sort comments. You can share, flag, and like comments. You can reply to specific comments, which keeps discussion organized.
Thwink.org is not a blog. Nor is it a news or a reference site. It's a website dedicated exclusively to solving the most pressing problem of our time: the global sustainability problem. That's a problem that has stumped millions of experts for decades, so it sits in an unusual class of problems that can be described as "big hairy global problems that have proven impossible to solve."
But we don't believe the problem has to stay in that class forever. Unlike many, we have not given up. We have not resigned ourselves to fate and declared the problem insolvable and the future catastrophic.
Instead, Thwink firmly believes the sustainability problem is solvable. That's because root cause analysis has never been applied to the problem as a whole. This explains why past solutions have failed and why solutions that would work have never been tried. So what do you thwink will happen once solutions that are designed to resolve specific root causes are tried?
It won't be easy.
If you'd like to help, start by commenting. Every page on this site is one more small step toward figuring out how to solve the sustainability problem via root cause analysis. Since this has never been done, there are bound to be tons of errors, omissions, weaknesses, and so on. Point these out! There will also be unclear, boring, and a million other kinds of bad writing. Point that out too! There may even be pages that have great ideas or are well written. Point that out!
Whatever you do, do it in a constructive manner. That's the only way many of us working together are going to be able to solve the problem.
If your posts are consistently constructive, after you've established yourself as a valuable commentator you will magically rise to the exalted level of commentator extraordinaire. After that your posts will not be moderated. They will instead be posted instantly. This is kind of cool. It's also more productive.
Once the comments become extensive, we will be adding additional moderators. We will also be adding additional levels, including one for those who can add new pages to the website.
Welcome to our commenting community!
